Is My Child Right or Left Handed?

Statistics suggest that approximately 85% to 90% of the global population is right-handed. Which of course means that only 10% to 15% of the world is filled with lefties!


Now, I imagine you are wondering. what about those who are Ambidextrous ? Well approximately 1% of individuals are considered truly ambidextrous. However, it's important to know there is a difference between true ambidexterity and mixed-handedness, where individuals may use different hands for different tasks but still have a dominant hand.


The Need to Know

Up until the age of 5 you can rest easy if you child has not established a hand dominance yet. In fact, you should see a significant amount of use out of both of your child's hands in those infant and toddler stages. However, if your little one is off to kinder and you are still noticing a lot of hand switching, try some of these tips below to see if you can figure out which hand is more dominant!



Tip and Tricks to Figure Out if Your Child is Right or Left Handed

- Hand your child a small toy in the middle of their body and take observations of which hand reaches for it more often


- Which hand does your child use when eating with utensils or picking up food with their hand?


- Set up a painting activity where paint is on one side of your child and the brush is on the other, then reverse the set up and see if you notice any differences


- Have your child throw a small ball to you using one hand, you should start to notice them favor one side over the other, especially if you challenge them to throw the ball farther
