Tips for when your baby is just not a fan of tummy time:

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

First, let's talk about Plagiocephaly. It is the medical term for when an infant's head shape changes due to excessive pressure to one portion of the head. This tends to happen when a baby does not get enough tummy time.

20 years ago this was not commonly seen, however with the big push to decrease the frequency of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) (which was very successful by the way) this diagnosis, according to the Mayo Clinic is seen in more than 200,000 babies every year.

We get it, a lot of babies don't like spending time on their tummies, but it's essential to their development to keep trying. It's not just head shape to be concerned about, time on their belly helps build important muscles of the neck and back that lead to greater motor skills of sitting, crawling, walking and eventually writing!

Below you will find some handy tips to encourage more tummy-time for your precious one:

Tip #1 - A little goes a long way

If you have a fussy baby that seems to just hate tummy time try just breaking it down in the tiniest of increments. Does your baby get upset after 30 seconds of tummy time? Work on finding that sweet spot even if it is only 15 seconds. The goal is to get through tummy time without your little one getting too fussy. Then repeat this throughout the day when they are not tired or hungry.

Tip #2 - Find something novel and stimulating

Toys that make noise, light up, spin or even a small mirror could be a great distraction tool. Use an item or your own face to entertain them to squeeze out those extra moments to help build the strength and endurance needed for healthy development.

Tip #3 - Use a prop

You could invest in a specific tummy time pillow like these or keep it simple by rolling up a towel or using a small pillow. Place it under their chest and you will likely see your child willing to spend a little more time on their tummy.

Tip #4 - Mix it up

Everyone benefits from a change in scenery right? Try tummy time on the bed, outside on some soft grass, or even on a family member chest!

Tip #5 - Still struggling?

Honestly sometimes our fussy little ones just really need that extra support and physical comfort. So if they just are not tolerating time on their belly when placed on the floor, we suggest you start with holding them in your arms on their tummy with maximum support for their chest and lower half of their body.
